Demise of Major General A S Peiris (Rtd) RSP VSV USP IG

Last rites of Major General A S Peiris (Rtd) RSP VSV USP IG was held with full military honours at General Cemetery, Borella on 8th August 2015.

Late Major General AS Peiris (Rtd) RSP VSV USP IG born in Pannipitiya on 2nd October 1943 and had joined the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 26th March 1964. During his distinguish military career, spanned nearly 35 years, as a gunner officer, he held several regimental, staff and command appointments such as Commanding Officer – 6th Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery, Commander - Security Force Hambanthota and Mathara, Director Artillery/Commander Artillery Brigade, Commander - 13 Brigade, 5 Brigade Group, 22 Brigade, 6 Brigade, Commander - Security Force Trincomalee, General Officer Commanding – Task Force 4, Regimental Commander – Sri Lanka Artillery, Director General General Staff – Army Headquarters, Coordinator in Chief – Batticaloa/Ampara, General Officer Commanding – Task Force 3, Quarter Master General – Army Headquarters.

Late Major General AS Peiris (Rtd) had followed number of courses of training in Sri Lanka and abroad and had excelled in them. Some of the courses he had followed are; Young Officers Course – India, Motor Transport Officers Course, Field Artillery Young Officers Course – India, Gunnery Staff Course – Pakistan, Long Gunnery Staff Course – India, Senior Command Course – India.

In recognition of his bravery displayed in the face of the enemy, he was awarded with RanaSura Padakkama and in addition, he was awarded with number of medals in recognition of his dedication, commitment, loyalty and unblemished service rendered to the Army,namely Vishishta Seva Vibhushanaya, Uttama seva Padakkama, Purna Bhumi Padakkama, North and East Operations Medal, Riviresa Campaign Service Medal, Republic of Sri Lanka Armed Service Medal, 50th Independence Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Army 50th Anniversary Medal, Sri Lanka Armed Services Long Service Medal, Presidents Inauguration Medal.

His sound military knowledge together with his gentlemanly qualities stood him in high esteemed stead in his profession and during his retired life, bringing credit to the Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery in particular and to the Sri Lanka Army as a whole.

Late Major General A S Peiris who was popularly known as Siri Peiris was a distinguish Gunner who always remembered as Founding Father of the 6th Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery, 4th Regimental Commander and 2nd Colonel of the Regiment of Sri Lanka Artillery, over and above the invaluable leadership given to the officers and men of Regiment of Artillery towards the success.

Colonel Commandant of the Regiment of Artillery, all officers and men, both retired and serving, express their heartfelt sorrow and intense feeling of loss at the demise of senior Gunner officer who was symbolic as an officer and a gentleman. We the Gunners stand beside the family members of Late Major General Siri Peiris in their hours of grief.
